About this book
Pride and Prejudice is a romantic novel set in early 19th-century England that follows Elizabeth Bennet, the witty and independent second daughter of a family with five unmarried daughters and no sons, whose estate is set to be inherited by a distant cousin, leaving the sisters financially insecure. When the wealthy and seemingly arrogant Mr. Darcy arrives in their neighborhood, Elizabeth takes an immediate dislike to him, especially after he insults her at a ball, while she is charmed by the handsome and affable Mr. Wickham, who tells her false stories about Darcy's cruelty. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's older sister Jane falls in love with Darcy's friendly friend Mr. Bingley, but their relationship is sabotaged by Darcy and Bingley's scheming sisters. In a pivotal moment, Darcy confesses his love to Elizabeth but does so in an insulting way, and she harshly rejects him, accusing him of ruining Jane's happiness and mistreating Wickham. The next day, Darcy gives her a letter revealing the truth—that Wickham is a dishonest fortune-hunter who tried to elope with Darcy's fifteen-year-old sister—forcing Elizabeth to confront her own blindness and realize that her prejudice against Darcy was based on false impressions, just as his pride had blinded him. As Elizabeth's feelings begin to change, a scandal erupts when her youngest sister Lydia elopes with Wickham, threatening to disgrace the entire family, but Darcy secretly intervenes to save them. Elizabeth finally realizes she loves Darcy, and after he proposes a second time with genuine humility, she accepts. The novel ends with their marriage, along with Jane's union with Bingley, celebrating the triumph of love, self-awareness, and mutual respect over pride and prejudice.
